While I love the idea of giving Erik more screen time to give his character more depth then the black&white portrayal of good and evil.. I feel that his back story is very well explored already in the first movie.

The first movie was all practically about Magneto and how he becomes the person he is now. From his childhood to his revenge and how it was all about his goal. Charles almost seemed like a side-character who only aided in his endeavor.

I feel that the second movie would be perfect for exploring the more vulnerable side of Charles so I’m really disappointed they will continue to put all the focus onto Magneto.

See, that’s the thing…they explored Magneto’s backstory a little in the first, but…not very thoroughly. I mean…his parents died. And that’s terrible. But that’s all it was. It was one scene where a loved one of his died. Batman has that. Spider-Man has that.

But Magneto has the fucking Holocaust. He has his Jewish heritage that seems to have been largely stripped from him. He has working as a goddamn sonderkommando. There’s really so much more there to be explored.

Magneto’s adult life was largely the focus of “First Class”, but his childhood was almost as under-explored as Charles’. “First Class” is far from a legitimate origin story for either of them.

And another thing that I don’t feel like people are appreciating: Just because the film is supposedly Magneto-centric does not mean they will “put all the focus onto Magneto”. It doesn’t mean Charles won’t be given due character development. I honestly feel that it will mostly be a further portrayal of their relationship (that just happens to go slightly more in depth with Erik) than some…Erik biopic.

As far as “X-Men” films go, it’s pretty much impossible for Professor X to ever be considered a minor character. He’s a mutant icon in the comics, and a pop culture icon in real life.

I’m looking forward to Magneto - hopefully - being afforded the same iconic status as the Professor without it having a purely negative connotation.

#I completely understand wanting more Charles though. Believe me. #Choosing between the two was never an option.

okay, my screeching aside, i too believe they won’t really heap ALL the focus on Magneto. But I will be very, VERY disappointed if Charles is sidelined nonetheless, because I was really looking forward to more development on his character there, and I have always thought it was much needed.

X-Men: First Class Sequel Will Focus on Magneto

but…but Charles

I’m yet again struck with the feeling that the people in charge of making movies don’t really understand the movies they make.  Like that XMFC featurette where one of the producers(?) says that people like the X-men movies because they like seeing characters use their powers.  Noooo.  Any old stupid superhero movie involves that.  They’re good because of the characters and particularly their feelings of isolation based on having those powers.  And in interviews it’s clear that the actors and others directly involved in making the movies get that, but apparently the people who run the show in the background do not.

Dammit, they better not mess this up.

N-NOOO BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE STUFF BOTH FASSBENDER AND MCAVOY WERE SAYING ABOUT HAVING MORE CHARLES?? SEEING CHARLES ADAPT AND DEAL WITH LOSS AND, AND EVERYTHING? YOU’D BETTER NOT LEAVE THAT OUT OR I AM GOING TO STICK SOMETHING DO YOU HEAR ME

i mean of course i am all for seeing magneto try to pull off the JFK assassination or something but that would probably be standard blockbuster fare IT NEEDS THAT EXTRA EDGE. DON’T NEGLECT THAT, PLEASE DON’T NEGLECT THAT.

It’s official: Matthew Vaughn is returning to direct the sequel to his box office smash X-Men: First Class.

First Class co-producer Simon Kinberg is currently banging out the initial drafts of the script, which I’m sure will now see revisions on the part of Vaughn and his writing partner…

Erik gets angry, like he does sometimes, and when he calms down there’s an above shot from quite a long way away of part of the city with him in the middle. And all the metal bits of the city, cars and poles and stuff, have positioned themselves around Erik like iron filings around a magnet.

YOU MAKE A SEQUEL WHERE THERE IS LOTS OF ANGST WHERE FANGIRLS CAN COO AND CRY OVER CHARLES THEN ERIK HAS A SUDDEN CHANGE OF HEART COMES BACK TO THE MANSION AND MAKE-UP LOVIN’ ENSUES!
THEN ALL IS WELL!
ALL! IS! WELL! DAMMIT!!

I want that so much, so, so much ;_; In my head (the evil part that likes to mix all the movie canons together and confuse me terribly) it has to happen because I still view them both going to see Jean Grey parents together. I know it won’t, but i’ll stick with my illusions for a while longer.

Erik has to come home in First Class ‘verse, okay? Like in Ultimate, all right? I mean, it’s set using real world events as the backdrop and, last I checked outside my window, mutants weren’t fighting on the street. So Erik must go back to Westchester and live happily ever after with Charles, you hear me, Matthew Vaughn?! Don’t tell me otherwise. I mean, why bother making Raven Charles’ sister if you’re not going to use her in some kind of Magneto’s Redemption arc? ;___;

ALL OF THE ABOVE ^^^^^^^^

[Charles] just had two major things happen to him. He’s lost his best friend, essentially, and he’s just been paralyzed from the waist down. Which is just a huge, huge blow to his considerable ego. So he’s got to deal with that.

And I don’t think we can just brush over that and go, “yeah I’m in a wheelchair now,” because Professor X is in a wheelchair. You’ve got to deal with that, I don’t care if he’s a superhero and has brain powers or not, he’s just had a huge part of his physical life taken away from him, by someone he cares about more than anyone else. So he’s got to deal with that. That’s part of the interesting ideas that we’re talking about with Matthew [Vaughn], that Matthew’s very excited about which I think is fantastic, but I can’t really get into them with you because they may (or may not) form the spine of the story.

James McAvoy, ladies and gentlemen: biggest Cherik shipper out there. I also love that he mentioned that there are “ideas that WE’RE talking about,” referring to him and Michael and all the brainstorming they seem to like doing together about these characters. A recent interview with Michael has him mentioning that he and James have been talking about ideas, and that what Michael is interested in seeing most himself is the growth of Charles into Professor X.

Here’s hoping that journey involves lots of Cherik, however angsty it may be.

‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ Writer Simon Kinberg Hired To Write ‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel

I can’t help but feel I should point out that not only did those many people help with the story/script, but the actors themselves also helped. It’s been said at least a few times that James and Michael stood their ground in keeping Erik and Charles’ relationship going and progressing in a certain way, different from what was originally scripted and such. They made tweaks of their own as things progressed, obviously talking this over with the Director and such but yes. They wouldn’t/didn’t let the relationship fall to the way side or play some minor part and I’m sure they did more than that. So. If the original cast is coming back, which is kind of a duh I would I think, theeen..regardless of this man being the writer, I actually feel..better. Especially just knowing that there really might be another one, and I would really really like that.

So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see and hope for the best. But either way, if they officially decide to make another with the same cast I’ll still be dancing in my room with joy.

Also very true. Crew/director/screenwriters are one thing, but First Class’ cast itself was/is another powerhouse entirely (lol James the biggest shipper of us all). NOT HAVING 100% OF THE ORIGINAL CAST BACK ON BOARD WAS NEVER AN OPTION EITHER. Thank goodness they all signed contracts, hurr *grin*

‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ Writer Simon Kinberg Hired To Write ‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel

beerosie:

Mutilple news outlets are reporting that Simon Kinberg has been hired to write the sequel to X-Men First Class.

“…Widely regarded as two of the worst entries in the series. But Matthew Vaughn, along with a crack cast led by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, delivered a clever, involving, and gritty origin story reboot of sorts with ‘First Class.’ One that took the superheroes back to their ‘60s beginnings, and pitted them against a real life threat, giving the movie the kind of raised stakes realness, that none of the other movies could claim to have. So you would think that it would just be a no brainer to bring back the same creative team as the first film to ensure a repeat success for the sequel, but it isn’t that easy.

I do hope they bring back Matthew Vaughn. But, as the Playlist quite rightly notes Simon Kinberg might be the first in the line of several writers to work on the draft of this script.

OH DEAR GOD UHM.

NOT SURE HOW I AM SUPPOSED TO FEEL ABOUT THIS.

BUT YOU PROBABLY HAVE LESS CHANCE OF GOING WRONG IF YOU MANAGE TO BRING BACK ALL THE ORIGINAL CREW AS WELL RIGHT. Especially the screenwriters. the screenwriters are very very important to me. they’re supposed to make all the drama and all the gay happen without making it look stupid.
